Ulla Courage edition by Agnes Alexander Literature Fiction eBooks
The setting is about a year after the Civil War ended. It's a first person account between Ulla and Cord. They're both dealing with loss and uncaring relatives. Some of the condescending attitude towards women is spot on for the time period. Ulla has been helping her dad run their general store for the last ten years in Independence Missouri. When her dad got sick, he asked his brother and his family to come and help out. But the dad had not seen his brother in a while (guessing), and didn't realize what a selfish, greedy, hen pecked man the brother had become.
Ulla is smarter than average and knew things weren't quite right with her relatives. The banker has long been a friend of the family to her and her dad and starts her thinking about changing her circumstances.
Cord returns home from the war to find his parents killed and their home burned. But his wife managed to save her parents’ home by having an affair with a Yankee. Then she dies in an accident while shopping. He is bitter about the affair and disgruntled because he thinks the 18 month old might not be his son. He decides to leave his in-laws and travel to Oregon in a covered wagon with his daughter and the boy. The couple he hires to help him on his journey quits in Independence Missouri. Then he meets Ulla.
Years ago I liked playing the computer game called the Oregon Trail. I was always thrilled when everyone made it to Oregon without dying. When they go on the Oregon trail, no one dies, however, there are many accidents.
While on the Oregon Trail, Ulla and Cord are learning to live together and get to know each other. There's a bit of communication hesitation. There's a few bumps. Once they settle into town, the story wraps up, but continues for a few more pages.
It's a sweet book with a few twists. There's a handful more people than I mentioned here. There's some praying, but it more like, "Please God, let him get better," kind. There's a bunch of endearments: sweetheart, honey, etc.

Ulla Courage edition by Agnes Alexander Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Fun story. Enjoyable details of the country store and some nice Wagon Trail scenes. Liked the heroine.
Nice story that could have been extended and more descriptive of the frontier life and Ulla's and Cord's marriage.
Done
Not terrible. Picked this out for light reading - the story was interesting, but some of the characters were a bit cartoonish with poorly defined motives. Most of the details were reasonably historically accurate. Finished it in a couple of hours.
This was a well written book and I love reading about the journey our ancestors made getting to the west. Ullas's Courage was the first
book I have read by this author, she did a good job and I enjoyed her characters in the story. I would recommend this book to friends.
I have several of Ms Alexander's books but I don't buy all of them. I really like this one. Predictable, of course! HEA is to be expected but the story is well told and characters are fleshed out nicely with society we can understand. Highly readable and even rereadable.
Relative's greed gave this smart young woman the courage to make a new life for herself. Interesting story for those who like settling the west adventures.
The story was good, but I thought this book was going to be a sweet historical romance, and the storyline was, but there are curse words in this book and I would have not purchased the book had I known that. I had not read this author previously, and I don't know if this is typical for her books. There are not any described sexual scenes, but more eluded to than my preference. Again, there was a good storyline, just more PG 13 than what I would have preferred. - In case editors/authors/ employees read this review, just for thought, it would be nice if the buyer could choose to purchase a book where there are two versions if an author chooses to not to write a PG rated book, i.e. a PG option. Thanks.
